  70, of Plattsmouth, NE passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha. He was born on July 26, 1940 in Plattsmouth, NE to Edward and Katherine (Ruehl) Baumgart.

Gene was born, raised and schooled in Plattsmouth, NE. Graduated from Plattsmouth High School in 1958. Worked at Western Electric from 1958-1965. He met and later married Martha Haase. In 1965 he was drafted into the U.S. Army for 2 years and was stationed at Fort Hood, TX. After the Army he returned to Plattsmouth, where he went back to work at Western Electric until he retired in September of 2000 after 41 years of employement. Gene is a life long Plattsmouth resident. He lived on his parents farm all his life, which he and Martha bought and farmed while working at Western Electric, except for the 2 years in Army at Fort Hood, TX.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #365 and Hugh J. Kerns American Legion Post #56 both of Plattsmouth.

Gene is survived by his wife Martha, one son, Raymond and his wife Melinda of Plattsmouth, NE, two daughters, Evelyn “Evy” & husband Larry Albin of Plattsmouth, NE, Joan and husband Rodney Kuhl of Carter Lake, IA, six grandchildren, Jonathan, Ashley and Dalton Baumgart, Tyler and Taylor Kuhl, Sierra Albin, one great grandson Braxton, one brother, Edward and wife Beverly Baumgart of Plattsmouth, NE, two sisters, Thyra Ryan of Plattsmouth, NE, twin sister Janet and husband Charles Konkler of Plattsmouth, NE, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Katherine Baumgart and three sisters, Veda Bretthorst, Eunice Campbell and Norma Wagner.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, December 23, at Roby Funeral Home Chapel in Plattsmouth, NE.

Donald R. “Butch” Walraven, age 76 of Fremont, NE died Sunday, December 19, 2010 at Fremont Area Medical Center.

Donald was born April 24, 1934 in Scribner, NE to Ralph and Florence (Spath) Walraven. He grew up in the Scribner area and then moved to Fremont. He served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 2, 1954 to Nov. 21, 1956. After his service, he worked various jobs, retiring as a machine operator for Western Electric in Omaha in 1993 after 30 years of employment.

Donald married Beverly Klebe April 18, 1953 at the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Fremont. Beverly died December 26, 1992.

He was a member of Sinai Lutheran Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, lifetime member of V.F.W. Post #854 of Fremont, a charter member of Fremont Eagles’ Camping Club and a former volunteer fireman for the Fremont Fire Department.

He is survived by: Son – Robert and wife Jan Walraven of Hooper, NE; Daughter – Cindy and husband Mike Pittack of Fremont, NE; Sister – Norma and husband Loren Pagels of West Point, NE; Special Friend – Marilyn R. Lingo of Fremont, NE; Grandchildren – Tim and wife Heather Walraven of Arlington, NE, Jenna Walraven of Fremont, NE, Jared Walraven of Hooper, NE, Dustin and wife Tabatha Pittack of Lincoln, NE, Blake Pittack and fiancé Kate Owens of Lincoln, NE; and 3 Great Grandchildren – Alyssa, Kora & Ava.

He was preceded in death by: Parents; Wife, Beverly; 1 Brother; and 4 sisters. Funeral Service will be held 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at Sinai Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Michael Ostrom will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 21, 2010 2-8 P.M. with the family receiving friends 6-8 P.M. at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont.

Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church Wednesday. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Fremont with military honors conducted by members of the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20.

Died at Fremont Area Medical Center Sunday August 1.

He was born in Norfolk, Nebraska December 22, 1938 to George and Edith (Chamberlin) Thietje and attended rural schools in Stanton and Madison Counties. Leo graduated from Norfolk Senior High School in 1957 and then attended Metropolitan Technical Community College and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He moved to Fremont in 1960.

Leo Thietje married Joanne Kayl August 14, 1960 in Norfolk, Nebraska.

He served in the Nebraska National Guard, Troop E, 167th Calvary in Fremont from 1959 to 1960. He worked as a lineman for Northwestern Bell in Fremont and in production control, custom fabrication engineering at Western Electric, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies for 37 years.

Leo was a past president of the Telephone Pioneers of America Cornhusker Chapter, Past President of Fremont Izaak Walton League, past President of the Fremont Golf Club, a member of the Fremont Cosmopolitan Club, He served on the board of the Dodge County Historical Society and was a committee member of the Dodge County Historical Society Travel Series. He was also on the Fremont Board of Public Works, a Dodge County Supervisor, and the Dodge County Board liaison to the Fremont Area Medical Center Board. He was a coordinator of the Thansgiving Day Community Dinner at Midland College and a member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church and the church treasurer.

Leo had a lifetime love of automobiles, often doing his own work on restoration, most recently of classic British sports cars. He was a member of the Midwest MGA club, Flatwater Austin Healey club, and Her Majesty’s Royal Nebraska Patrol.

He is survived by his wife Joanne, two sisters Judy Hasenkamp (husband Ken) of Beemer, Carolyn Tollefson (husband John) of Norfolk, and one brother George Thietje (wife Arlene) of Norfolk. Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be Thursday at 10:30 A.M. at Dugan Funeral Chapel. Rev. officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00. There have been memorials established to the Fremont Area Community Foundation, Fremont Area Medical Center Foundation, the May Museum and the Nebraska Evangelical Lutheran High School at Waco, Nebraska. Larry proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He had worked as a manager and retired from AT&T after many years of service. James K. Murphy, 73, of North Bend died Saturday, April 3, 2010, at his home at Legge’s Lake, which he built, near North Bend.

He was born Oct. 14, 1936, in North Bend to Albert and Alice (Daley) Murphy. He grew up in Cedar Bluffs and was a 1954 graduate of Cedar Bluffs High School. He was a graduate of Southeast Community College. He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 12, 1955, to Oct. 11, 1957. He was employed at the former Western Electric in Omaha while living in Cedar Bluffs. He married Kathleen Boettner on June 12, 1965, in Cedar Bluffs. After his marriage, he moved to Fremont. He retired from Western Electric (Lucent) in 1997 and then worked for Interiors by Joan until February 2010.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont and the Knights of Columbus Council 1497. He had been attending St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend for the last 15 years. He was a former member of the Fremont Jaycees and a past vice president. He was former assistant Scout Master of Troop 104 of Fremont.

Survivors include: his wife; a son, Michael Murphy of Fremont; two brothers, Patrick N. (and wife, Kathy) Murphy of LeMars, Iowa, and John B. Murphy of Omaha; and a sister, Joyce (and husband, Robert) Hayes of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend with the Rev. Donald Cleary officiating. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Colon.

March 3, 2010, at his home.
He was born July 16, 1939, in Los Angeles to Francis and Velma (Giese) Smith. He graduated from Pomona High School in Los Angeles. He married Karen Croghan on March 21, 1959, in Pomona, Calif. He moved to Wahoo in 1979. He worked as a master machinist for AT&T in Omaha from 1983 until his retirement in 2001.

He was a member of New Hope Bible Church in Wahoo and Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 2971 in Wahoo. He was a Boy Scout Troop leader.

Survivors include: his wife of 50 years, Karen of Wahoo; children and spouses, Paul and Heather Smith of Springfield, Jill Smith of Salem, Ore., Susan and Dave Vech of Malmo, Daniel Smith (and special friend, Rebecca McNally) and Cory Smith (and special friend, Stephanie Trudell), all of Omaha; a brother, Steven (and wife, Donna) Smith of Chino, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Survived by wife, Patricia Szymanski, one daughter Antoinette Marie Szymanski, Marshfield, MO and one sister Loriane Caragher, Fox Lake, IL.
Corporal Michael E. Szymanski was in the 45th Military from 9-26-50 to 10-07-52, Korea Service Corps Company
Michael graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1960, Bachelor of Science – Chemical Engineering
Michael had three patents for the company:
1979 Oct 30 – Package Inductive Coil Assembly
1985 March 5 – Telephone Cable
1990 Feb 13 – Terminal Blocks
He started in Illinois and came to the Omaha Works when the Buffalo Works closed. Michael was a senior engineer.
He was also a member of: Knights of Columbus, Lions, Telephone Pioneers, and the American Legion.
